Carbide Guns : Dozens of Children Blinded by Carbide Guns During Diwali Festivities Across India

Carbide Guns Bhopal, October 23: What was meant to be a festival of lights turned into a night of horror for hundreds of families across India, as dozens of children were blinded or severely injured by makeshift “carbide guns” during Diwali celebrations.

In Madhya Pradesh alone, hospitals reported over 122 cases of eye injuries linked to carbide gun explosions, with at least 14 children suffering permanent vision loss, according to officials from Hamidia and AIIMS Bhopal. Most victims were between 8 and 14 years old.

The crude devices — made from metal pipes, calcium carbide, and water to create explosive bursts — have gone viral on social media platforms in recent weeks, with videos showing young boys firing them for fun. However, the chemical reaction produces acetylene gas, which can ignite violently and release toxic fumes capable of burning skin and damaging eyesight.

In Bihar, authorities confirmed more than 50 cases of permanent blindness, while similar incidents were reported in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. Several victims remain in critical condition with facial burns and shrapnel injuries.

Despite a statewide ban on the sale and use of carbide devices issued by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on October 18, enforcement proved difficult as the devices continued to circulate through local markets and online sellers. Police have since arrested several vendors accused of selling the banned items.

Doctors warn that even minor exposure to carbide explosions can lead to long-term vision damage. “The gas released during ignition is extremely harmful to the eyes. We are seeing injuries comparable to those caused by industrial accidents,” said Dr. R.K. Gupta, an ophthalmologist at AIIMS Bhopal.

Authorities are now urging parents to strictly supervise children during festivities and avoid any unregulated or makeshift fire devices. “A moment of thrill should not cost a lifetime of darkness,” said an officer from the Bhopal Police, who confirmed that awareness drives are being launched across schools and neighborhoods.

What began as an innocent celebration has turned into a grim reminder of how dangerous viral trends can become — transforming the joy of Diwali into a tragedy of light turned to darkness.
