New Delhi: A controversy has emerged at Jamia Millia Islamia University after slogans including “Free Kashmir,” “Free Sharjeel Imam,” “Death RSS” and “Death ABVP” were reportedly found written on walls inside the campus. It remains unclear who wrote the messages and when the incident occurred.
The incident has drawn objections from some members of the university community and prompted calls for an investigation. The university administration has said it is examining the matter, including available CCTV footage, to establish the circumstances surrounding the writing.
From “Free Kashmir” to “Bring Back Islam,” the reported slogans at Jamia Millia Islamia raise serious questions about what is happening on campus. Publicly funded universities are meant for education, not ideological provocation or vandalism. Identify those responsible and take strict disciplinary action. Taxpayers fund education, NOT campus politics and divisive propaganda!

ABVP-Linked MBA Student Seeks Strict Action
Anant, an MBA student at Jamia Millia Islamia associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), objected to the slogans and called for an investigation by the police and university administration.
He argued that such messages were inappropriate on a publicly funded university campus and demanded strict action against those responsible.
However, the identity of the individuals who wrote the slogans has not yet been established.
University Reviews CCTV Footage as Investigation Continues
University spokesperson Saima Saeed said she had been informed about the controversial writing and expressed disappointment over the incident.
She suggested that the slogans might have been written after 7 pm, although this had not yet been confirmed. According to her, the administration is examining CCTV footage to identify those involved.
Saeed said that if the investigation establishes the involvement of a student or an outsider, the university administration will identify the individual and take appropriate action. The university has also arranged paint to cover the writing on the walls.
The investigation is ongoing, and responsibility for the incident has not yet been established.

ABVP’s Jamia Unit Demands FIR
The Jamia unit of ABVP has expressed concern over the slogans, particularly the messages targeting the organisation and those referring to Kashmir and Sharjeel Imam.
The student organisation has demanded an impartial investigation, identification of those responsible on the basis of available evidence, and registration of a First Information Report (FIR).
The demands come amid an ongoing student movement seeking the restoration of an elected students’ union at Jamia Millia Islamia.
Why Are Jamia Students Protesting?
The controversy has unfolded against the backdrop of protests and a hunger strike by students demanding the restoration of student union elections at the university.
Students argue that an elected representative body would allow them to raise common campus concerns, including hostel facilities, fee-related issues, library services, drinking water and other academic matters.
Protesting students have also called for the withdrawal of disciplinary action against participants in the movement. They have sought accountability over the removal of protesters from the protest site on October 17.
The university administration has constituted a seven-member high-level committee to hold discussions on the students’ demands.
Students of Jamia Millia Islamia have been protesting to demand the formation of a students’ union, alleging that the university is not allowing it because it does not want to be held accountable.

Why Have Student Union Elections Become an Issue at Jamia?
The demand for student union elections has brought questions of campus representation and student participation in university decision-making into focus.
Student unions in universities can provide a formal platform for students to raise grievances and engage with the administration. However, the rules governing elections and student representation vary across institutions.
At Jamia, students are seeking the restoration of an elected union, while the administration’s newly constituted committee is expected to provide a forum for discussions on their concerns.
Whether the committee can resolve the dispute will depend on the outcome of discussions and the steps taken by the administration in response to the students’ demands.
